In a study of ESET, says thousands of Internet users from Russia, Ukraine, Belarus and Kazakhstan became victims of the virus-miner Stantinko.
According to experts, this malicious software is used for covert mining of cryptocurrency Monero. About 500,000 computers in postsovetskom space was infected with this virus.
Over the past five years Stantinko worked as an advertising fraud. After that hackers have refocused the program on the infected personal computers for the purpose of concealed mining Monero.
It is reported that the virus maintains a connection pool proxy. FOR scans the device to determine its capacity, and then begins to use the computing power for mining cryptocurrency.
In order not to arouse suspicion of PC users, the virus is carefully hidden and can even suspend production in some cases, for example when the computer is running on battery power.
